Automatic relations have been optimized for output display under 4D Server and 4D Client . For this reason, we recommend that you use automatic relations instead of manual relations when possible and when speed is a concern. When you display a list of records in a layout containing fields from a related file, the use of automatic relations causes 4D Server to display the records 5 to 6 times faster than with manual relations.
With an automatic relation, only one request is sent to the server, and all the data to be displayed in the layout (related or not) is returned to the client with one reply. With a manual relation, the RELATE ONE command is executed for each record, and the whole record is returned at each step.
